“Nzuko Umunna” (Lagos, Nigeria, 2023)

“Nzuko Umunna” means, “A gathering of kin,” in Igbo language.

This interactive workshop was conducted in Lagos, Nigeria, in collaboration with the Abele Art Foundation, and Tribe XX Lab’s XX-Ceed Festival of Art and Culture.

This event gathered descendants of survivors of the 1967-1970 Nigerian Civil War (or Biafran War) and our allies in a workshop aimed towards intergenerational healing in the aftermath of the war. Together, we examined memory, identity, trauma, and healing by centering our stories and perspectives, asking: What happened back then during the war, who are we collectively and individually today as a result, and how do we move into a future of healing?

I led a conversation exploring how ripples from the war continue to affect survivors and their descendants today socially, psychologically, politically, etc. I created postcards for participants with the official event image on one side, and question prompts on the other side, which guided our conversation.
