THE BIAFRA WAR DOCUMENTARY PROJECT (In development)

Genre: Documentary Feature Film

Roles: Director

Eze Eluchie, a child survivor of the 1967-1970 Nigerian Civil War (a.k.a. the Biafran War) and its genocide, is going in search of forgotten Biafran children who were airlifted for their safety and never returned to their families. Using word of mouth, social media, untapped archival records and media, and DNA (with the help of scientists at UC Berkeley’s Forensic Project), Eze is determined to reunite families that have been separated for more than 50 years and offer them closure.

This project examines individual and collective memory, identity, trauma, and healing in the wake of the Biafran War. It aims to spark overdue and necessary conversations about the aftermath of war by centering personal stories of survivors while seeking answers to the burning questions: What happened during those 30 months of war? How did survivors continue on? How do wars affect a person and shape a lineage? How does the memory of trauma exist individually, intergenerationally, and in community? How can we heal these wounds for present and future generations? From a broader lens, it will also ask: What happens when we forget our painful history? On the other hand, what happens when we remember, engage, and examine it?
